Jane,
It's worth saying that AVG Free Forum is worth joining, as its' a direct
line to tech support.
http://free.grisoft.com/doc/5445/us/frt/0
It's odd that you're not getting updates automatically, as that's your only
choice, in the free edition, at least.
To get an immediate update manually, press Windows key and B for Bravo, then
look for the AVG icon. Press the application key and pick check for updates.
At least you're protected for the time being from some of the more recent
malware.
Go back to that context menu you've just used and open the Control Center.
You'll get a list of all the AVG components and whether they're working or
not. Any clues there? Maybe your automatic updates aren't starting. Or maybe
you've got them scheduled for a time when you're not online. Is the Update
Manager working OK?
Also you could look at the Scheduler. If it's working OK, Press the
Application Key and pick Scheduled Tasks.
You get a readout of what tasks you've got, usually update and virus scan.
Press Tab until yo u hear 'Edit Schedule'. There you can schedule these
tasks for times that are most convenient for you.
Any joy so far?
Vince.
