[bcab] Re: Fly tipping what can be done about this

Hi Jane,

since these cards and leaflets probably go through every door in your street, I
would agree with Tiddy, or should I respectfully call him Mr Ogg, that there's
probably little you can do to stop them. However, there are two issues here:

1. If you need to fill in a form when you buy something, check to make sure
that if such a box is present on the form, that you have been told about it,
and that it is ticked to show that you do not want your address passed on to
other companies. The problem we have with that is that not all sighted people
who go through the forms are thorough enough to read literally everything on
the document, and this is the sort of section that is often missed.

Secondly, I see the potential impact for people with little or no reading
vision, especially living in households where there are no sighted readers
about. If you are forced to get someone to come in once a week for an hour
to read your post, I'm sure you would rather that they can spend as much time
as possible reading interesting and essential mail, and as little as possible
telling you about bin fodder. This may be something to be taken up with people
at the R N I B, to see if they have spent any effort in considering the impact
of junk mail on print-impaired people who may rely on outside help to assist
with their post. I'm not sure that it's particularly on topic for this list,
except when filling in online forms which may have junk mail opt in/opt out
fields to complete.

Best,
Clive
