I have been away for the past few weeks and have had to spend some time
going back through messages on the list to try to understand what has been
going last week.
I would like to ask that these threads should be closed, if people want to
discuss the matter further then contact me directly. I do not want to see
any more messages using language like "Perpetrator" as it implies Barry
deliberately tried to harm Dorothy. When all the insults and hot air is
taken away this is not what happened. Barry, as a member of the list, tried
to help Dorothy to listen to the hard disk sounds. As she couldn't download
the files he sent the five files as attachments to her. Barry was unaware
that his email client was splitting the files up into segments and that
shouldn't have been a problem anyway. Dorothy's ISP software erroneously
tagged the files as viruses or harmful and this tagging would have prevented
the split files from combining back into the original five files.
At this point Dorothy started to receive an unexpectedly large number of
files and was given the wrong advice by her ISP so she started to delete the
files. At this point she asked Barry to stop sending the files but this
would have been impossible for him. Firstly he only thought he had sent
five files in the first place and also once you hit the send button they
have gone.
Nobody tried to do any harm to anybody but the subsequent exchange of emails
both on and off this list got out of hand. In particular I hope that we
never see a 'flame' email on the list in future.
I hope that we do not see any repeats of this sort of exchange. The BCAB
list does not have a strict set of rules, we have guidelines as we value the
sense of community and support that the BCAB list has provided to many over
the years.
It is interesting to note that mixed in with all the recent 'noise' on the
list there was an interesting discussion about the use of access keys on web
pages. Please let us settle down and try and get back to discussing matters
that interest us in a friendly manner.
As I mentioned above if anybody wishes to discuss this matter further
contact me, or any member of the BCAB Board, off the list.
Yours sincerely,
Derek B. Naysmith (Dr)
