[bcab] Re: FineReader OCR

Hallo Tony thank you for explaining. I assume you bought direct from Abbeyy
then. As I said during the long topic on scanners I almost did as the German
office were kind enough to offer to send a trial.

However already having K10.5 with Fine Reader 7. I looked at the many
additional features in K11 and opted for it

Someone on this list was it Steve Nutt said why buy a 'cut down ' version if
you can buy the full product.

Can anyone on the list who uses Kurzweil tell me if they think that if they
don't buy from Abbyy direct but Kurzweil they get a cut-down version? I
would really like to know. Re voices Emily is like Daniel uses 22hrtz power
but is a bit less formal. All the new voices were fun to play around with
but I find I have gone back to Jane on my laptop for easy on the ear
listening and on my desktop Kate neo speech. Yes she is a bit American but
seems to spell difficult words without being pushed. Like you I want
accuracy. I do think I did get better results with Fine Reader 8 on Carbon
copies as I tested the percentages and noted them did this on the same
documents. Best wishes Dorothy.

Hi Dorothy
I don't use Kurzweil - I am using FineReader directly. Re voice - I use
Daniel. I find for leisure reading a combination of Daniel and SpeakOn is
absolutely superb!

Tony you could always Email Kurzweil and ask them. I found Version 8 of
fine reader better on for example carbon copies. re the other engine
Scansoft I think formerly the Engine Scansoft accurate was just as good.
did you use same settings or the Optimise feature repeat scan? I am
using an Epson 3490 It takes longer to warm up than I had hoped. I do put
highly coloured things in my scanner. sadly I fear packets of Easy to
eat meals and I usually know what I am having for lunch that way.
Dorothy.

Ps wonder which voice you are using, what do you think of Emily, and the
one called a Default voice that speaks in a loud stage whisper?

Subject: [bcab] FineReader OCR

Hi

I have recently been doing some tests with FineReader OCR on difficult to
read material - text over coloured backgrounds and photographs.
(Specifically the backs of paperback books).

I have been using both FineReader 7 and FineReader 8. Oddly enough, 7
performs this much better than 8 - it is faster and far, far more
accurate (often 100%!).

I have also found that successive scans on my cheapo Xerox flatbed
scanner give different errors, so I assume this is down to fluctuations
in the scanner's physical performance. Successive photos with a digital
camera do not give this problem.

I would be deeply interested to hear of anyone elses experiences,
experiments and setups for OCR.

Regards
Tony
