yes indeed. FS are suing GWMicro, maker of the Window-eyes screenreader
over the implementation of placemarkers on web pages due for release in the
upcoming version of window-eyes which will also see the introduction of
scripting capability.
Quite understandably, many people are concerned that this represents a waste
of money and a block on inovation. I have to say I do rather share these
concerns. There are features, such as browsing of web pages using a virtual
cursor, which Window-eyes implemented first. The terms they use are
slightly different but the process is quite similar. There is no point in
different screenreaders using different key strokes and giving features
different names just to avoid legal action. As always, it will be
interesting to read any comments that FS may have to offer on this one.
This really does look like an attempt to throttle competition though and I
think it can only lead to an angry backlash.
