VoIP is quite a complicated area to look into when it comes to services,
service quality
and pricing, however as a general rule, as long as you have a broadband
connection you can use VoIP
services which are completely independent of your ISP.
As an example one very popular british provider at the moment are vonage, who
offer unlimited calls
to UK land lines 24/7 for just £5.99 a month, far cheaper than any PSTN phone
provider. Bear in
mind also that there are no line rental costs with this, as it works over any
broadband connection
whether ADSL or cable.. Yet you do still get a phone line, with all the
trappings you would expect
from a normal PSTN connection. In fact vonage's range of included services -
e.g. call waiting,
callforwarding, caller ID, etc include more than most normal phone companies do.
There is more to this, for example on the minus side there are setup fees and
not all home phones
will work with it. But on the plus side, if switching to vonage you can even
keep your existing
phone number for a small fee. www.vonage.co.uk
The different providers' rates, call tariffs, & customer support is the real
maze. A good friend
of mine is on Sipgate www.sipgate.co.uk where he gets cheaper calls, and it
has been reliable.
Others include of course Skype, gradwell.com and Westlake, who offer national
UK calls at less
than 1p and landline calls to mobiles at 7.5p a minute by VoIp phone. Some of
the web sites
where you would get the information are not-so-accessible (as expected) and The
contracts do
vary a lot between the different companies, so it's always important to read
the "small print" as it
were.

Hi, further to this though, does anybody know of a way a totally blind
person can take advantage of the freely available VOIP services from many
ISP's without breaking the bank?
