[bcab] Re: Doing a Boot Time Defrag

Hi Barry,

I speak from experience on that one, so I wholeheartedly agree with you
about backing up. Mine wasn't serious, but I check disked a compact flash
card, Windows found errors and fixed them, and in the process, I lost a fair
few files. I didn't have them backed up, but they were not particularly
important. So I would strongly urge anyone to make sure they have a backup,
even if they do a chkdsk.

All the best

Steve

Hi Barry,
Hi Alexander.

1. I am as is suggested, storing data on D:\ That's a good idea. Try and
leave C for applications.

2. Can I convert both partitions to NTFS at the same time, or do I have to
do C:\ and then at a later stage do D:\, and if I can convert D:\ to NTFS,
will this cause me problems with my data, i.e, will I have to back D:\ up
first, or will the data stay where it is?
I would convert both partitions to ntfs for performance reasons.
Although you're data will be OK, I'd never give advice not to back-up data ,
so put the data onto a pen drive, CD or DVD's before conversion just in the
unlikely event of anything messing up. EG. You get hit with massive bad
luck and a power cut hits during the conversion.
Chance in a million but it's a possibility.

As to chkdsk, I will take your advice and run chkdsk on both partitions
prior to changing both C:\ and D:\ to NTFS.
Yup, good idea to minamise any errors.
Btw. Some might say backing up, and running check disk etc might be
over-kill for performing a conversion like this. I'd say only if the person
saying it can guarantee you're data wont' be lost and if it is they'll
replace it instantly to cause no hassle. <grins>

I'll have to clean both partitions out I think, because the total of free
space is around 9 GB if you add c:\ and d:\ together, but if you are
referring to the space on each partition, then there is around 4GB on one
and either 5 or 6GB on the other I believe.

6. Do I take it from your answer, that in your opinion I wont have to
reformat then.
Yup, you do not need to re-format and you can do this all within Windows
without reboots. The conversions that is.
