[bcab] Re: Debate on the BBC website about unspoken web addresses on TV

Hi all,

could we be forging stronger links twith B C S and other computer organisations
to get the message across? To those who assume we need sight to use computers,
of course, here we are, an oximoron, a computer association of the blind. That
"Of" is of course critical here.

Best,
Clive

  Hi

I think whoever does it is going to have to put out messages that are
unpopular with sighted people to get noticed. Can any charity that needs to
raise money actually really do that? I've taken the approach of complaining
that disability isn't on their list of discriminations etc purely as an
individual. It'll be interesting to try and get that thread to the top of the
complaints list, that might raise awareness in the BBC. The problem is that
people assume and won't find out for themselves. They are the people we need to
reach, and I fear our usual methods would mainly only reach those who either
already know, or would find out through curiosity anyway. There's some great
stuff on the internet we could easily link to and put a section on the website
about it all, that wouldn't distract from what we already do and would at least
help the curious.

  Cheers

  Dave

Yes, I came across this myself and think you're absolutely right. It's
astounding to realise the perception people have. Any ideas what we may be able
to do to raise our profile?

  Cheers,

  Tink.

  Hi all,

please see this extract from the RNIB's weekly Audio Description output from
Jill Whitehead.

I think this also shows there's some public awareness raising to be done on
the perceptions of our ability to use computers at all! Could we be the people
to do it?

  Jill Whitehead writes:

Second, have a look at the link below. It will take you to a section on the
BBC website where there is a debate going on about blind people watching TV
and using computers. Please feel free to contribute if you wish. The debate
was sparked by a "leaked" email from the Head of BBC Newsroom, prompted by
me, asking all news presenters to read out email addresses and phone numbers
etc. instead of just saying "the number is on your screens now" - enjoy!
Warning: if you have high blood pressure, it may go even higher after reading
some of the contributions you'll find on the site!
