There is a little free program called the Belarc Advisor that
will do what you are looking for and much more.
Download it from:
http://www.belarc.com
It will explain which RAM sockets are physically occupied, how
big the RAM chip in each socket is and its type.
Note there is DDR3 ram now as well as the older DDR2 RAM.
Note that the Belarc Advisor is not free for government or other
commercial users but is for home use.
