To automate backup and restore I personally like Outlook Express Backup Wizard,

It'll backup mailboxes, accounts, rules, message rules, signatures etc into one file that can be password protected.

You can get this from,

http://www.outlook-express-backup.com/

To answer your question though.

You'll find the dbx files in,

C:\documents and settings\YourUsername\Local Settings\Application Data\Identitys\A weird ID number\Microsoft\Outlook Express\

Hi Catherine. Simply copying the DBX files was my next idea but where are they? I've tried using Search but don't really know how to wwork it and haven't found them. I've a vague idea they're in the ENU folder but where's that? Cheers.

Hi both,

It should be enough to copy and paste the dbx files onto your backup
drive for backup p-rposes. Not sure why that's not working for you
Tom. You could try deleting the folders.dbx file as this will force
OE to check the folders again...

Also it's a good idea to leave copies of messages on the server until
you delete them from OE as this means you can redownload them if needs
be.

Hi Tim,

Having problems like yours. I changed the location of the message
store and then coppied it. When I put it back into another machine,
only the inbox showed up as expected, the other folders showed as 0
even though the tree structure was preserved and I can see that sent
items is a big file. So, partial success only.

I have also tried an import, but, get an error message saying no
messages or another prog has the files.

Outlook express is a sod to deal with in other words.

Subject: [bcab] Backing up OE data

Hi Listers. Can anyone help? A recent near death experience in
hard disc terms has refocused me on the need to back up data which
I'm quite good about anyway but I've never been able to figure out
how to back up Outlook Express folders.
If I try the export option under File in the menu bar I first of
all get asked to ok the data going to Ms outlook or Ms exchange but
when I ok this the export could not be performed because of an error
initialising MAPI.
What does this mean?
I have a memory that all my OE folders exist with a DBX extension
in a folder somewhere. Would it simply be enough to cut and paste
this folder, or the OE folders individually onto my back up drive?
  Any knowledge welcome. Thank you.
