I'm not trying to sound like I told you so or cocky.
This is exactly why I went for an automation tool. For years I used to back it
up manually. It's a clunky email program to be honest for
backups/restorations.
I personally still use it because it does what I need it to do at home and I
don't have the time to dabble with another client.
These are all great suggestions and I'm not knocking the helpfulness of Leon
and Catherine just.... Can you be bothered? Grins.

Hi Tom,
Two ideas. 1 exit OE, delete the folders.dbx file and go back in to OE, see if
sent items shows up then. Be aware that when you do this OE may take longer to
start up, particularly if you have a lot of e-mail.
Or 2, With the import method, to get around the catch 22 problem, exit OE then
move all the dbx files out of the place OE is using as a store location, put
them somewhere else on the drive you can easily remember/browse to. Then go
back into OE and do the import again - now they're not being used by OE so if
you still get that error then it means oe reckons there's no cessages. Let us
know what happens.
