Tom,
 
You need to be careful with this, since it expects you to set it for each
different media type, i.e. audio CD, Data CD, Bootable CD, etc. So if you
are likely to want to make something in a different format, always make sure
that it is ticked.

Recording tab was not checked. Peculiar because I'd already burned cds.

Not sure what this means in terms of whether this drive should be able to
burn dvds or not.
 
In device manager,  under cd rom and dvd drives, optiarc dvd+-rw ad-5170s
 
 
It can read and write cd and play dvd.
