[bcab] Re: BEWARE OF FRAUDULENT E-MAILS

Your right, it says something like your ebay registered name has been included.
. .to verify security. Quite convincing though.

JT,

The fraud Ebay messages dont' include your real name only your username and sometimes not that.

Not a bad idea to check the sites message store for you though.

I use my email notifications for just that, not to click on handy but sometimes dangerious links.

I've had a number of phishing emails that included my proper ebay user ID. Luckilly, I wasn't selling anything at the time so I was suspicious - the best policy is never to click on any link in an email to log into a website. I don't even do this when I know the email is legitimate because I've been expecting it.

These email fraud attempts are more commonly known as fishing.

As in the persons trying to fish for your details.

I've got loads of Ebay fishing emails and when you click on the link in them
either to reply to a fictitious user or update account details it's been
some site in Russia that comes up in the address bar.

Ebay do always include your real name in any corrospondence as well as your
username but it's a good idea to check the address bar.

IE 7 has fishing filters built into it, in an attempt to combat this.

However, as I was scanning my mails this evenign I saw one from Tris on
Computer Security and he's right. The end user liek it or not is having to
become more responsable with thier computer use nowadays.

There are also loads of Paypal lookalike sites, so please be certain what
you're logging in to. A small typo could be a big problem.

This message is for anyone who has a Paypal account.

I have recently received several messages purporting to come from Paypal
asking me to update my account. I was suspicious of them, so I closed the
message and logged onto my Paypal account from within Internet Explorer and
my financial favourites list. There was no request there to update my
account, so I contacted Paypal asking if they had sent me any messages
asking me to do this. I have today received a message from them saying they
have not asked me to amend my details.

If you have a Paypal account and receive any messages like this, the first
thing to do is look at the greeting. Paypal say on their page about
protecting yourself against fraudulent e-mails that they always greet you
with your full name or Paypal business account name. The messages I
received began with "dear Paypal user", which indicated that they were not
genuine. When Paypal write to me the messages always say "dear Wendy
Sharpe".

Even if the message asks you to click on a link to go to the Paypal website,
never do this. Always close the message, open your web browser and log on
in the normal way.

Finally, Paypal would like you to forward any suspicious messages to:

spoof@xxxxxxxxxx

telling them why you are suspicious. They will then check the messages and
try to find out where they are coming from.

I hope this will keep you all safe.

Wendy
