We at BBC Worldwide Interactive Learning have collaborated with the Centre
for Educational Leadership at the University of Manchester on a programme
called
Leadership Pathways for the National College for School Leadership. The aim
of the programme is to provide a set of online professional development
modules
which, together with face-to-face sessions and in-school coaching, will make
up a personalised learning programme for school leaders.
The online modules themselves consist of twelve onscreen 'course units' ,
with anything from 6 to 9 'segments' of learning. These segments contain a
mix
of resources: research texts, audio and video extracts and various onscreen
activities such as interactive questionnaires or card-sorting tasks. Each
segment
of learning also has an online notebook which acts as a sort of electronic
record of the user's learning.
We're currently in the process of trying to make accessible versions of both
the online notebooks and the various onscreen activities, in the form of
accessible
word documents that can be processed by screen readers such as Jaws. These
would be provided on a separate CD.
We have preliminary versions of some of these notebooks plus some of the
activities and are currently looking for screenreader users (eg Jaws users)
who
would be willing to test some of these files on the system they normally use
and give us some feedback on their usability and accessibility. Ideally, we
are looking for people in the Milton Keynes area, but since we are able to
e-mail these files, it would in principle also be possible to liaise by
phone
and the internet. We propose to pay £35 an hour, plus any expenses if a
face-to-face meeting is required. Ideally, we would value someone being
able to
work on these files over the next week or so, as we have a relatively tight
deadline.
We are in a position to send some sample files immediately to anyone who is
able to help us with the testing.
