[bcab] Re: Audible Vs. RNIB BookSite Book Club

Hi Wendy,

If you go to advanced search in Audible, you can specify that you want
unabridged only, so it shouldn't take long at all. The other thing I like
about Audible over RNIB, is that there is an Audible player for mobile
phones, called Audible Air. There is no such Daisy player yet, so I always
have my books with me on my trusty N91. If you have a good 3G connection,
you can even download Audible books direct to your phone, without a PC.

If the RNIB allowed downloading of books, it would be a service worth
considering for me, but streaming, naah.

All the best

Steve

Barry

I do so agree about abridged books. I was looking for titles on Audible
last night, and it took me ages to find something which was unabridged. As
you say, talking books are unabridged, and so are most of those from Calibre
and Listening Books. I have just had some abridged Ruth Rendells, but I put
up with them just to hear George Baker, who plays Wexford so beautifully in
the TV productions.

I've been a member of audibles and the talking book service for years.

One word of warning Re: audible.

Unless I'm misstaken unless it says, unabridged beside the books title it's
an abridgement.

This, drives, me, up, the, wall!

The RNIB's seem to be all unabridged from what I've seen.

Another plus for the RNIB is that you haven't wasted your money if you don't
like a book. It might sound good by the synopsis, but I've been
disappointed on several occasions with books that sounded good. Also, if I
want to read a book again, which seems the only reason why you would buy a
book, then I can just order it again. The only advantage with Audio that I
can see is that they have a greater selection and newer titles.

Barry

Hello

I don't know much about Audible so my assumption below may have missed
something ...

Audible subscription of one book per month for a year - £96; Audible
subscription of two books per year - £180.

Another comparison of sorts is with the RNIB book service which is the older
fashioned CD Daisy by post:
Subscription per year including the loan of a Daisy player - £73;
Subscription per year without a Daisy player - £50.

So if keeping the books is not a requirement and the latest books are not a
must, the RNIB book service is good value and my experience with it has been
very good (reading on average two books per month).

Regards
Isaac

One advantage of Audible is that you are actually buying the books and can
keep them forever. You can have a subscription for £7.99 a month which
entitles you to one book at that price, however much it costs in the
catalogue, so you can save quite a lot. I think there is a two book per
month subscription for £14.99 as well. The RNIB streaming service is still
like a lending library. You can either stream the books from the internet
or ask for a CD to be sent to you, but you have to send it back or delete
the book from your book shelf and choose another. I don't think there is an
option to try before you buy.

Hi,

I am myself considering joining Audible. However, as RNIB have just recently

released their BookSite Book Club service, I wonder what do people feel the
advantage is of Audible?

Also, is it possible to download the audible manager and a sample book
before signing up? I was thinking chiefly of the accessibility of Audible
manager.

Lastly, if you use an iPod Shuffle, I presume you must use iTunes to load
books, or is that not so? This is all new territory to me.

Best regards,

Norman
