[bcab] Re: Articles for the blind

If their print catalogue was printed in 16 point typeface or above, it
would have been perfectly legal to send by Articles for the Blind.

Hi Clive

Exactly! I was lucky my son was available to leg it down the road, or
else getting the envelope would have been a pain for me. I believe
they sent their entire batch of print catalogues out in that way, so
maybe someone not familiar with AFB and the way it works did the
mailshot on that occasion.

Hi Jackie,

it's not the money that's the problem, but the jaunt. To some people
it may mean traipsing a couple of miles across town, or even getting a
taxi in and back, especially if you can't get through to the local
sorting office from the national call centre, to find out the size of
the package. I'd be happy to walk to get a small package, but a large
one would be a different matter altogether.

Best,
Clive

Hi Clive

I rang Tapesense about it, partly because I had originally requested
an electronic copy of their catalogue and got print, and partly to
tell them they shouldn't be sending out standard print catalogues and
simply writing Articles For The Blind on the envelope. Oh, and there
was the jaunt down to the sorting office and a small matter of £1.40?
(smile).

Hi Jackie,

I don't know if there is a different ruling for large print, but I
always believed that if Tapesense had sent a package containing only
standard print but under Articles for the Blind, they shouldn't have
done. Braille yes, large print I don't know, tape yes. Not sure
about audio CD, but this sounds like an entirely different issue to
me. Please can anyone clarify the position?

Cheers,
Clive

        Hi Andrew

Some time last year, before I moved from Scotland, I recall
that Tapesense sent me their catalogue in print, and wrote Articles
For The Blind on the envelope by hand. My son went to the Sorting
Office for me and had to pay £1.40 postage that the postman requested
because he said it wasn't valid.

I took this up with Tapesense, and advised them to use AFB
labels to avoid this happening to other people. So perhaps you aren't
recommended to do this without a proper sticker.

        Hi,

Does anyone know with AFB if you can just print out an
envelope and write Articles for the blind on this, or do you have to
use one of the stickers that RNIB sell in packs?

I have been doing the former for a while, and usually get
stuff through, but lately have had stuff returned as not qualifying
(mainly CDS which are specificly for VI people and contain VI specific
content).

        Thanks.

        Andrew.
