Howdy all;
Unless you are willing to drive all the way down to Organ Pipe Cactus
National Forest, there are few observing sites on state land near Ajo. The
fence that runs along the road has very few openings and the one or two that
I tried some years ago all lead to ranch houses.
Organ Pipe is a great site, but, like any site that is marked on a AAA map,
the motorhome crowd is going to be there. So, there will be lights and
generators running until 10 or 11 at night and old folks get up early for
some reason, so they will be making noise by 6 in the morning. I do
remember the parking lot being pretty large, so maybe you could get away
from all that to some extent. I kinda gave up after one night and moved on.
As Andrew said, you also have to endure the road to the park. For
astronomy, Sentinel is a much better location. And I am not saying that
because I am one of the folks who found it all those years ago. It just
seems to have stood the test of time as a good place to set up a telescope.
The bad news is that there are no facilities there, but that is probably the
reason it is still useful.
Hoping for a clear weekend;
Steve
