Hi,
Just to toss in a few additional observations on the Venus transit halo or
bright ring...
It was very pronounced in H-Alpha images. No processing required to bring it
out.
As Venus approached third contact the ring was at times very apparent against
the limb darkening of the sun. I didn't notice this just after second contact.
Probably just too excited.
For a few minutes after third contact the atmospheric ring was bright and
complete on the side of Venus that had moved off the Sun.
A few minutes before second contact the atmospheric ring was bright right where
Venus was intersecting the photosphere. This made it look like two bright
horns were reaching out to grab Venus. It was a very interesting effect to
watch.
I think Venus' atmosphere, contrast effects, pattern completion effects and our
atmospheric seeing are working together in some very interesting ways during a
Venus transit. It is an event that surprises you.
Clear skies,
Mark
