speak at a meeting concerning a proposal for a change in zoning on a parcel
of land on the northwest corner of Vekol Road and Interstate 8 (Exit 144).
That meeting was this morning, and I am happy to report that it went quite
well.
> In attendance were eight residents of Vekol Valley, Sandra Barr (Sierra
Club), Scott Davis (IDA), Howard Israel (IDA and EVAC), Peter Argenziano
(EVAC), Mary Rose Wilcox (County Supervisor), and two members of her staff.

> The outcome concerning rezoning to allow construction of a large truck
stop (160 acres) at Exit #144:
> County Supervisor recommendation: denial of request for rezoning.
> County Supervisor's Staff recommendation: denial of request for rezoning.
> Maricopa County Planning and Zoning Commission recommendation: denial of
request for rezoning.
> The matter could still be scheduled for a vote by the Board of Supervisors
on August 13. Ms. Wilcox indicated that the Board does not usually vote
against unanimous recommendations.
> I received a call from Ms. Wilcox late this afternoon informing me that
the applicant has now withdrawn their request for a zoning change!

opposition as key to this outcome.
