I totally agree with the comments being made in this thread. Urban society is WAY overlit at night. It used to be different, of course, before widespread electrification at the start of the last century. Are we safer now? No. Thanks to the IDA for its educational efforts on this issue. The architects and lighting engineers already know what's really needed, but their efforts are stymied by obsolete and ill-advised statutory and code requirements. Earth Hour was all about education, like Earth Day. Do we make an "energy profit" during the 24 hours of Earth Day? Unlikely ... but it's the symbolic value (and education) that's important here. The idea of Earth Hour is not to stop after an hour, but to continue through the night and see the savings then. The one hour thing is to demonstrate the impact of all those unnecessary and wasteful lights on the environment, not to demonstrate any dollar or energy savings during that time. > > Steve Dodder > President, Saguaro Astronomy Club > Director, Stone Haven Observatory > > fester00@xxxxxxxxxxx > > http://www.stargazing.net/Astroman > > > To: evac@xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx; az-observing@xxxxxxxxxxxxx > > From: GREGASKINS@xxxxxxx > > Subject: [AZ-Observing] Valley Fever: City spends $3,000 to shut off lights for Earth Hour > > Date: Fri, 18 Apr 2008 08:19:36 -0700 > > > > http://blogs.phoenixnewtimes.com/valleyfever/2008/04/ > > city_spends_3000_to_shut_off_l.php > > > > Different perspective from this New Times article. > > -- > > See message header for info on list archives or unsubscribing, and please > > send personal replies to the author, not the list. > > > > _________________________________________________________________ > Going green?
