My activities were not very exciting for Friday and Saturday but
satisfying at Blue Hills Observatory. Earlier this week I noticed the
backlash adjustment on my Meade 16" LX200R (not an ACF but an R, an
original R) had become very loose from when I adjusted it when I first
got the telescope. When I adjusted it the first time I gave the proper
adjustments to the two set screws, one of which is spring loaded and did
nothing else. I did not know these set screws working loose is a common
problem (I am told) and so I did not use locktite or lock nuts. Both set
screws had worked themselves out quite a lot and maybe this is what was
causing my guiding problems I mentioned before. I'll soon know. Anyway,
I spent Friday and Friday night making a rig to be able to remove the
OTA by myself. I was busy doing other things Saturday day and on
Saturday night I removed the OTA and RA housing. The RA housing unit is
very light and so I was able to easily remove it from the pier by myself
by hand. This morning I did the backlash adjustments and I just now got
done getting everything back together.
