As Brian mentioned, I was observing at Anderson Mesa with my 18 inch (46 cm)
Obsession, last night. The alternator went belly up on the drive home and I
coasted to a stop along Lake Mary Road in the middle of elk country. Man, I
love my wife. She was a really good sport about being awakened at 3 am by my
call for "Help!"
Anyway, the conditions were spectacular...excellent seeing and transparency.
What with work and dealing with getting the alternator replaced, I haven't had
time to finish my sketches or prepare notes, but I observed NGC 5529 and two
companion galaxies, Palomar 4, Palomar 5 and a few Hickson clusters. I'll post
the notes with links to my drawings when those are ready, but what a great
night!
And thanks to Brian for showing me the SQM. I had been thinking about getting
one but I suspect my "toy" fund just made a transfer to the "car" fund ;o)

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Tuesday night viewing
Telescopes are busy on Anderson Mesa this evening. Boston Univ
student Josh Shiode is hunting for new planetary nebulae with our
1.8-m telescope by isloating a sulphur emission line in the far-red
part of the spectrum. Bill Ferris is hunting Hickson groups with
his 46cm Newtonian from an open area near the telescope compound.
I am hunting asteroids with the LONEOS camera. More unusually,
I have my Pronto set up and am doing some casual viewing.
This is the second clear night following the strong trough
passage. The sky brightness from the SQM meter has been about 21.60
since the end of twilight. I think that's "8 out of 10" on the
Steve Coe scale. Now (about midnight) that the Milky Way is coming up,
you can readily tell this is a beautimous night.
