Thanks to Tom's timely heads up, tonight I saw the Shuttle and ISS pass
by from my balcony in the McDowell foothills up here in Fountain Hills,
right on schedule at 9:06 pm. The two appeared right under the North
Star, and slowly cruised across the sky close in formation, then faded
into the Earth's shadow in the northeast. Down below I could see the
flood lighted Fountain in the Lake was doing its thing....
Incidentally, the City has been operating the Fountain on the hour (for
15 minutes) at 2 and 3 am this summer, to avoid an algae buildup in the
Lake. This presents an opportunity for photos of the Fountain at night
with the Last Quarter Moon (in the East) from the West side of the Lake
-- normally not possible, since on the normal schedule the Fountain runs
on the hour only until 9 pm...
