I have several telescopes and have found for star parties and just
"lookin" a large DOB is ideal. I think many will agree.
Orion Telescope has a 10" for around $600 and 8" for a couple hundred
less. The only thin I don't like about these DOBs is they are way too
low. Even at the zenith I have to bend way over to look into the
eyepiece. As many have done, it seems best to add a foot or two to
the base using a box or something similar to raise the whole
telescope up.
While the 8" Meade is nice at $839/$700 you can have a significant
increase in light grasp with the 10" DOB for only $600. If you just
desire the lookin rather than taking images or doing anything else
requiring guiding, I recommend aperture to gimmicks. These DOBs are
super buys for the aperture. If $ is not a problem there are larger
DOBs out there, but beware, anything over 12 - 13" is a bear to haul
around.
BTW, Stan, my last message to you bounced again. I get a report of a
"Connect error" same as before. Something strange is going on with
your server.
