Hello all;
On Thursday morning a 10th mag star (GSC 1324-2107) will be occulted by Saturn.
The ingress times will be around 1:00 AM on the 19th of Sept, but Saturn will
only be about 10 degrees above the horizon. Starting around 5:00 AM the star
makes its way out from behind the ball of the planet and passes behind the
rings. For the egress section of this event, the planet will be up 60 degrees
or so.
This rare event is well worth making time to observe.
AJ Crayon and I observed the occultation of 28 SGR in 1988(?) and it was
fascinating. This star is 5 magnitudes fainter so it will not be quite as
brilliant, but may also be well worth missing some sleep to see.
If anyone has more accurate information, please post it.
As a preview of a another fascinating event, in January of next year Saturn
will move across the face of the Crab nebula, M1. I also look forward to
checking that one out also.
Lots of fun;
Steve Coe
