Bill and all,
I have found an interesting simulator at:
http://www.calsky.com/cs.cgi?&lang=en
It is a German site with an English language version. Simulations of
Mars at 1:30am MST for the 22nd show Syrtis Major moving across the
terminator and into darkness. I believe I saw a dark area in the correct
place, but I did not have the Profiler in the field with me, nor was I
aware of the existence of CalSky, which seems like a really good resource.
You are correct, the S&T Profiler gives a false impression that features
along the proceeding edge are easy, when in fact they are not. I will be
using CalSky to verify my observations in the future.
Thanks for the info.
Matt
