Jeff, that almost sounds like to voice of experience! I gotta remember that
analogy though,
I'm sure I'll find it handy at my next church group gathering. :-)

I dunno, I think most would not consider this any different than hiring a
comedian for a
corporate crowd. I mean, there's always a few comedians in any group
willing to practice
their craft for free, right? Think of it like a paid speaker. The speaker
may come armed
with a slide projector and a few overlays, the astronomer comes with a
telescope.
A really professional astronomer comes with the scope, some hand out notes
about the objects
they're showing, pictures, SAC membership forms :-), etc.
A good gig for any astronomy buff, No?
