[AZ-Observing] Re: Question about Iridium flare

Peter,

Looks it was indeed an iridium flare. There was one this morning right =
about
the time you mentioned. From my house Heavens above predicted mag -2.
Depending on where you are a short distance can make a pretty big =
difference
in brightness. Heavens above will show you flares from the previous 48
hours. This allows observers who see one to go back and identify it. =
From my
house this is what I got:

16 Nov 06:00:00 -2 53=B0 349=B0 (N ) 18.8 km (E) -8 Iridium 34 =20

The more accurate your position info, the better the results.

Subject: [AZ-Observing] Question about Iridium flare

This morning at 06:00 as I stepped outside my apartment I was admiring =
Orion
when I noticed what I thought must be Jupiter until I realised it was in =
the
wrong part of the sky. It was in the North only a few degrees north west =
of
Polaris and looked very Jupiterish with a yellow hue and at least Mag1. =
Then
I realised it was moving due north and by the time it passed Polaris =
within
a minute it faded abruptly to just barely visible. I watched it a couple
more minutes until it was lost in the glare closer to the northern =
horizon.=20
Was this an Iridium flare? Or possibly some other satelite? Is there a =
way
to find out?

- Peter.
