[AZ-Observing] North Rim Grand Canyon Star Party

Hi all,

Jenn and I made it to the first two nights of the star party, which were last
Saturday and Sunday. Steve Dodder appears to have things sailing very smoothly
in his first stint as organizer. The star party is held on the porch behind
the main building, so the 10 or so telescopes set up there were about the upper
limit. The lights are in good control, so the public got to enjoy great views
through the scopes. Seeing right next to the big hole in the ground is
remarkably good, with nighttime air temperatures that barely fall from sunset
through midnight. We were able to show off shadow transits of Jupiter's moons
on both nights, the second one involving giant Ganymede. With Steve at the
helm and Chris Hanrahan helping him out, I'm sure the star party is going well
this week.

We have made a trip into southern Utah, currently at Bryce Canyon National
Park. While this park always has a big astronomy presence, this week it is
especially so, as the next four days are its Astronomy Festival. Tonight, we
are heading down to the little town of Panguitch to see keynote speaker Story
Musgrave, who I'm sure will have some stories about servicing the Space
Telescope.
