When Comet Halley returned in 1986 I created a club talk for SAC on that
subject.  One of the things I found was that Edmond Halley spelled his own
name--in his own hand--at least three different ways:  Halley, Haley and
Hally.  So, spelling was quite loose in the old days and this discussion of
Tempel may be the same effect.

If anybody has the 3rd Edition of the "Peterson Field Guides: Stars and  
Planets," the progenitor of the Leonids is identified as 55P/Temple-Tuttle
(sic). 
It seems a pretty common misspelling.
