Rosie and I took a shot at seeing Starshine 1 the first time around. We
watched very very carefully during passes called out by Heavens Above, but
never succeeded in seeing it. I think it's great, because the first time
around, they had school kids polish the mirrors, mostly in science classes
and ship them to NASA for installation. Then, they'd observe the satellite
and submit data for analysis, just like the pros do! How exciting for the
kids! The first one was used for orbital decay studies, due to atmospheric
drag. The web site had altitude plots, and you could actually see when the
sun was more active because of increased drag and sudden "slips" in
altitude. Neat science.
We plan on giving this one a go, too.
