Polar Scopes are not really good enough for Astro-Photography. You are
almost always are going to have to drift align to achieve better accuracy. If
you had an Astro-Physics goto mount I could show you Rolands favorite method
for accurate polar alignment that is ten times more accurate than any
polar scope made. I use that method now on my 1200 goto and it really works!

You might own one of the older polar alignment scopes which were

in that the display of star for a proper alignment was erroneous.
It was OK for observing but not for photography. Later editions
corrected the mistake. That is a possible reason that comes to mind.
