I just tried a welder's glass on a 8X40 single binocular side and the
sun spots are very pronounced through the smoke and haze.

My eyes are not good enough to see the with just the filter. I tried
before with clear skies and the filter was not dense enough. Combined
with the smoke and haze , it seems just right.
