National Solar Observatory Visit
For the past 5 months I have enjoyed participating in the Radio Jove
Radio Astronomy Educational Program directed by Dr. James Thieman of
NASA Goddard Space Flight Center.
See http://radiojove.gsfc.nasa.gov/
I have a long and technical page about it, with frequent new entries,
at
http://hubbleed.bravehost.com/jove.html
The Radio Telescopes are SMALL but the educational experience is LARGE.
I regularly observe remotely with several Radio Telescopes that
participate in Radio Jove, sometimes in simultaneous telephone
conferences that are a lot of fun as we comment on the unfolding
events.
In this program we principally observe Solar and Jovian radio emission
at decametric wavelengths (usually in the 15-30 Megahertz band). It is
a great program for Science School Teachers and their Students and I
have been greatly inspired by communicating with several of them.
We frequently correlate our observations with those of other ground and
space based Solar Observatories, and during my summer vacation from
Tucson I was particularly interested in visiting again the National
Solar Observatory in the Sacramento Mountains of New Mexico.
I have posted pictures at
http://hubbleed.bravehost.com/jove-nso.html
This is my third visit to NSO in New Mexico, my first one was in 1972,
when I was working with the National Radio Astronomy Observatory, and
Dr. Evans who founded and directed the Observatory for many years gave
me a tour.
At the end of the page I have added pictures of some outstanding
Amateur Optical Observatories in the mountains about 20 miles east of
Cloudcroft. They will be of particular interest to TAAA mmebers who are
developing an Observatory just west of the Chiricahua Mountains in
Arizona.
