As Jeff Hopkins correctly inferred, my post resulted from perusing
the current images at the SOHO site:
http://sohowww.nascom.nasa.gov/data/realtime/
...specifically the 'MDI continuum' shot, which is more-or-less a
visible-light picture. The four 'EIT' images are at far-ultraviolet
wavelengths, and so show the high-temperature activity, particularly now
in the two regions coming onto the visible disc.
