Jack,
As a matter of fact, I do have _Vickers CCD Atlas: North_. Retrieving it from
my accessory case in the garage--I never observe without it--I compared the
Vickers image of this galaxy trio with my sketch. It is likely I observed NGC
7464 per the scenario you describe.
In my original sketch, the brightest portion of the galaxy I identify as NGC
7463 is positioned where NGC 7464 is located in the Vickers image, along a
line from the 8.2 magnitude star (PPM 142100) at the center of my sketch
toward the northernmost star in the threesome to the east-northeast. At 129X
in my 10-inch, this galaxy appeared as a single extended object. Oddly, my
drawing shows the region I originally identified as the core (which may in
fact by NGC 7464) offset from center. There is a very subtle nebulosity
extended from this brighter section to the west-northwest. This may be the
core of NGC 7463.
This corresponds better to the calculated surface brightnesses for the
objects. NGC 7463 should be a threshold object, while NGC 7464 should have
been comparatively easy. I plan to revisit this interesting trio in two weeks
to test your explanation.
Thanks,
Bill Ferris
