[AZ-Observing] Monoceros observations

Observations in Monoceros by Steve Coe
6" f/6 Maksutov-Newtonian Sentinel, Az. See=6 Transp=8

M50 14mm EP 31 stars counted, mags 9...12. Bright, large, rich,
pretty compressed and well detached from the Milky Way.
An obviously orange star of about 10th magnitude is on the
south side of this cluster. I need to look at this excellent
cluster more often.

NGC 2232 22mm EP 17 stars of mags 8..., pretty bright,
pretty large, not compressed. It contains one interesting
chain of pretty faint members and is not very well detached.

NGC 2238 22mm EP and UHC filter This is the Rosette Neb.
there are several NGC numbers associated with this region.
Without the filter I counted 28 stars of mags 8...., bright,
large, not compressed, several bright members in two parallel
lines of stars. Using the filter really enhanced the nebulosity.
The nebula forms a horseshoe around the cluster, a very bright
region of the Winter Milky Way.

NGC 2261 Hubble's Variable Nebula 14mm easily seen as the wedge
shape so familiar in photos from Mt. Palomar. Raising the
power with a 6.7mm ep shows it as pretty bright, pretty small and
has a star at the tip of the triangular or comet shape. At the
higher power the comet shape is easy and the western side of the
nebula extends further away from the star at the tip.

NGC 2301 8.8mm EP pretty bright, pretty large, rich,
compressed, 33 stars of mags 10...., there is a nice, bright
blue and yellow pair near the center of the cluster. This
cluster is well detached from the Milky Way.

NGC 2323 8.8mm EP 42 stars of mags 8..., bright, pretty
large, compressed, pretty rich and well detached from the
Milky Way. There is a prominent light orange star at the
edge of this cluster.

NGC 2343 8.8mm EP 14 stars of mags 10...13, poor, not
compressed cluster at the edge of a large dark nebula.

Collinder 97 22mm EP 28 stars mags 10..., pretty bright,
pretty large, not compressed. The stars in this interesting
cluster form a "curly cue" shape, somewhat like a nautilus
seashell.

Collinder 106 22mm EP 20 stars mags 10..13, pretty bright,
pretty large, not well detached, just a bright spot in the
Milky Way.

Mel 72 6.7mm EP 11 stars mags 11.... with a fuzzy background.
This cluster is faint, pretty small, triangular and is somewhat
well detached from the Milky Way.
