The pill you need to take Steve is called 'ClearSkyClock'.
It actually works pretty well as long as the model input is good, and
could have saved you a lot of driving the last couple of days.
Since you (and others) seem to have no problem with going fairly long
distances, here's what I'd suggest. Go to the 'all Arizona' CSC page:
http://www.cleardarksky.com/csk/prov/Arizona_clocks.html
...which gives small scans of the cloudiness part of the CSC prediction
blocks. Just now (about Noon on Saturday) the new model runs from this
morning's data are posted. (For future reference this happens at roughly
10am and 10pm local time, resulting from upper-air soundings and the
model runs from them that are taken at 5am and 5pm local time.)
Okay, now scroll down the list, and notice that the only sites showing
"all blue" (i.e. clear sky) for tonight are in southeast Arizona, and
that the farther southeast the site it is, the more blue there is.
Roughly speaking, anywhere south and/or east of Tucson is a good bet.
Just as a reality check, look at a regular IR satellite image, such as:
http://www.atmo.arizona.edu/gifs/IRAZ.GIF
...and notice that the only cloud-free region in Arizona si the southern
part, and given the likely motion of the clouds in the north (from the
west toward the east), western AZ is probably out (notice that the CSC's
for Flatiron, Sentinel, and KOFA show cloudy for tonight), as is most
of northern Arizona, and even Phoenix and Tucson. In other words, the
current cloud coverage is consistent with the CSC's and thus the
predictions roughly 12 hours downstream are probably pretty good.
Make your choices/take your chances from there.
\Brian
