[AZ-Observing] Re: Mars Party

Although it was a little hazy, the event here was a great success; I think
there must have been at least a three hundred people here and possibly a lot
more! Steve Dodder kept a count of the number of folks looking through his
telescope--it was 167 for his telescope alone, and there were about 10
telescopes set up. (Some were up on the 3rd floor terrace outside the
science center facing east, others were in Heritage Square.)

Some folks may have turned away because eventually the streets leading to
the Heritage Square parking garage were blocked off for baseball traffic;
several people told me they wound up parking really far away and walking.

A camerawoman from channel 10 came out and took some footage early (it
wasn't dark yet) but I don't believe any other media came.

We had volunteers from all three astronomy clubs. It was hot and muggy,
particularly on the third floor eastern terrace where we set up many of the
telescopes. Eventually, we pulled out a huge bowl of ice and a water-cooler
bottle of water, and some cups; wish we'd had a soda stand set up!

We've been letting folks know about ASU's event on Friday.

The ASU West Mars Mania last night had about 300 students, some parents etc,
and only 3 telescopes for a constant 30/line lined up to see it. The
neighbors were also interested when I went home to pick up my telescope, so
I put it out on the sidewalk for a quick viewing and never made it back.
ASU Tempe will have theirs Aug 29 and a repeat on Sept 5. Friday the 5th or
Saturday the 6th would be good for a public get together somewhere, but
don't know where we would do it, maybe ASC again. Steve D. and Christine,
how did it go? Get inundated?
