M1 seems to me as a rather unpopular visual object; overlooked for more
interesting and challenging objects. I agree to some extent that beside the
context of which the object represents, M1 is "boring".
Running with the star-death/supernova theme this past weekend, I revisited
the Crab. Again, not too intriguing visually until I used the O-III
filter--after all, it works well on the Veil. The overall surface
brightness and size decreased, but the filamentary structure, seen vividly
in many photographs, popped creating the illusion of a three-dimensional
spidery cocoon. Having never tried the O-III on M1 before, and only the
UHC, this became a pleasant surprise and a highlight for a night plagued by
horrendous seeing. Incidentally, the stars were not twinkling as one might
expect.
