Or just use a CCD camera to do the same thing. The time-lapse Leonids video
that was on the news was shot with a CCD camera and 28mm lens, covering 53
x 36 degrees, much larger than Orion, and seeing meteors just about as
faint as the eye can see (with some processing). It was shot one frame per
minute, which included 43 seconds of integration, 17 seconds to save the
file and recycle for the next frame, from which could be extrapolated the
meteor rate for a full minute of integration. The video that was shown on
the local TV news only showed a portion of it, and the version that was on
MSNBC, etc. was full length, but greatly reduced in size and resolution.
The original video covered the whole storm period, over 4.5 hours total,
compressed via time-lapse to 300-some frames. If someone wants to analyze
it frame by frame and do a meteor count I'd be more than glad to make the
original data files available and provide any technical help necessary.
