Joe Orman and I went to a site south of Florence to observe and
photograph the Leonids. We didn't do an official count but I put a LOW
estimate at 700 to 1000 per hour around the peak based on the average
timing between meteors. The longest break between bursts of activity
between about 3am and 4am was no longer than 15 seconds. During the
bursts, meteors were seen around one every second or two with many
events of as many as five at a time. There were so many, I didn't know
where to stare. I saw a few events that looked like a meteor race with
multiple meteors streaking along side each other. I sure hope my photos
come out!
When I left my tent to start observing the 'show' at 1am, the sky was
lightly overcast but cleared except for a band about 15 degrees high
from the horizon after 230am and for the most part stayed that way until
about 530am. There were some occasional other clouds passing through,
but for the main event, the sky was fabulous.
