If you get a laptop, make sure it runs WinXP. This is the first OS from MS
that handles power management well. Anything else, and you will get computer
freeze ups when your power management mode is enabled. If the laptop can not
handle WinXP, do not get it.
If you get an Intel based laptop, make sure it is a "Centrino" model and not
a "Celeron" model. The Celerons may be cheaper, but the Centrinos will pay
you back with better battery life and a longer useable life.
Dell sometimes has some fantastic offers on their website. The only problem
with shopping at Dell is customizing the laptop to have "only" the features
you want and not those you want plus 20% more that get added to your
customization because their website is tricky about adding things.
Here's another tip if you shop at Dell: sign in as a small business person
and sign up for their sales notification by email. Once a month they'll send
you a coupon for an additional 5-10% off your order. The small business site
has very good prices. Often it has better prices than the employee discount
site. Dell's argument is that they feel that most people signing up on the
small business site will in fact be small businesses and in general they buy
several computers on a single order and should get better prices.
So happy shopping.

Jon,
Thanks for the information. The reason I said Windows 2000 as a OS is
because sometimes I get a little dense. A year ago I had a desk top made
up at Mother Boards and Upgrades. Since they made it, it did not come
with an operating system and I used Windows 2000 I already have. Also,
one desktop I have has removable drives that have an operating system on
each drive (they are not slaves to a master drive). As a result of all
this I think in terms of having to install an operating system. If the
laptop comes with an OS, which most do (I know some desktops don't, or
at least that was the way some were sold a number of years ago), I would
probably use it, but it would depend on whether it came with a cd of the
OS if I ever had to re-install again.
