Well, I watched Ganymede and Europa do their switch over at 3:21am local
time this morning using a 3.5" refractor at 160x. Seeing was poor, 5/10 or
worse, but Jupiter was clear of the high thin clouds that were covering much
of the sky. As Ganymede merged into Jupiter's disc about 3:20am, the bump,
which had been getting smaller, suddenly appeared to get bigger which made
it look like Ganymede had reversed directions. In a couple of minutes Europa
separated from the planet and became fully visible. It was pretty neat and
Ganymede's dot shadow was visible the whole time when seeing settled.
Unfortunately, I could not see the 2 moons separately at the same time
because Ganymede was not visible against Jupiter's bright background. In
better seeing I have been able distinguish the moons while in transit.
