There is a fairly neat moon event on Jupiter tomorrow morning at 3:20am
local time, 10:20 UT 1/23/03. Ganymede will be just beginning to transit
the planet and Europa will be just coming out from behind Jupiter. As
Europa pops into view the 2 moons will be very close together (within 1 arc
sec) right on the planet's limb but should be separately visible within a
minute or two even in a small scope. Ganymede will already be casting a dot
shadow on Jupiter so it should be an interesting display. I will have the
alarm clock set to catch it and probably use a 3.5" refractor since I will
be too tired to carry out anything heavier :o)
Earlier, about 10:55pm local time tonight, Io's dot shadow begins its
transit and the GRS is near the meridian at the same time. Should be neat
too if seeing permits a view of all the details.
By the way SkyMapPro 9 now displays the position of the GRS and the moon's
dot shadows on Jupiter's surface so that it is very easy to check these
events in advance using the time step feature.
