[AZ-Observing] Inaugural Meeting

Perhaps off topic for some lists!

The first meeting of the Mesa Astronomy/Geology Society will be Saturday
January 18, 7 to 9 PM. Membership is preferred or donations made at the door
to cover various costs but our meetings are open to the communities and
interested persons!

Our speakers that evening will be Dr. Peter Wehinger, Astronomer at Steward
Observatory, on "The Large Binocular Telescope: Work In Progress", and Dr. Jeff
Hester, Professor of Astronomy and Structure of Interstellar Media at Arizona
State University. Dr. Hester's area of research deals with " Interstellar
medium in the Milky Way and external galaxies; structure of the diffuse ISM;
interstellar shock waves; supernova remnants; pulsar wind interactions;
Herbig-Haro objects; and H II region structure." He has worked with the Hubble
Space Telescope in much of his research.

Our upcoming future speakers will be 2/15 Matthew Fouch, ASU Seismologist; 3/15
Rob Kennicutt, U. of AZ. Astronomer; 4/19 Ted Bowell, Lowell Observatory
Astronomer; 5/17 Ronald Greeley, ASU Planetary Geologist. More fill the
schedule and will be announced later.

If anyone would like to do a brief show and tell or give a short presentation
prior to the main speaker(s) please feel free to contact me for any of the
dates. Be advised, however, that the speakers are furnishing their own digital
or remote slide projectors. That piece of equipment we do not have as yet.
Anyone have such an item to loan or donate to the cause??

Directions: We meet once a month the Saturday closest to the full moon in the
clubhouse of Alta Vista Apartments, 1444 N. Recker Road in Mesa from 7 to 9 PM
or slightly longer. To get there either take the 202 east to Higley and then
south on Higley to McKellips, east to Recker, south on Recker; or take the 60
east to Higley, north on Higley to Brown then east to Recker and north on
Recker. The complex is between two churches on the west side of the street.
Those in east Mesa or farther east should already know where to locate Recker
off Main.
