It was much the same on Sunday night too, with the creeping crud slowly
drifting over. Seeing was as you say and transparency came and went. My
mirror didn't help, being at 100 degrees and took three hours to cool
since I forgot my cooling fan. I observed with Richard Payne
(http://azastrophotography.com). We noticed seven or eight scope circles
in the crunchy grass and watched a zillion ants who all went to bed
early thank goodness. There was a good long window around midnight and I
was able to see a 13.8 mag galaxy (NGC 4642) so Richard got in some
shots with the astrograph at that point.
I took a look at AJs globular, NGC 5466, a sprinkling of 12th mag stars
over a glowing background. Brighter M3 looked small compared to it, but
much sharper and busier. I think this is the globular you look at when
you can't find M3 - or it's the most misidentified in the quest for M3
at Messier Marathons.
Other notable in nosing around Virgo in the area of Porrima, NGC 4666,
wow, but totally ignored by all observing lists, is a 10.7 mag edge-on
with possibly a dust lane. It even has a companion galaxy, mag 13.6 NGC
4668, opposite a tiny star triplet. NGC 4517 is another great but
ignored edge-on, a long streak with a supernova-like bright star near
the center.
