Hello folks;
The terminator on the Moon cut through some interesting areas on Friday morning
and so I rolled the roof back on the 7 inch Maksutov and took a look. I was
attracted to the area south of Janssen and that included two craters that I had
no notes on from past observing. This in on Rukl #75.
Hommel is a large crater with slumped walls. There are many tiny craters on
the flat floor of this crater, so the smooth floor is broken with many
craterlets at 335X. There is a prominent, elongated central peak. Hommel "A"
is a prominent crater on the northeast wall of Hommel, it has a central peak
and bright walls. Hommel "H" is between Hommel and Pitiscus, this crater has a
small crater dead center. So, instead of a central peak, Hommel H has a
central depression.
Pitiscus is to the north-north east of Hommel and has a double central peak and
a flat floor with terraced walls. There are several linear features across the
floor. They are drawn on the Rukl map. Are these called "rilles"? I didn't
find any mention of them in the text.
There is some very rough, hummocky (sp?) terrain between Pitiscus and Janssen.
Lots of interesting detail in that area.
All in all, a fun hour or so;
Steve Coe
