[AZ-Observing] Re: Herschel 400 Awards in Arizona

Tom, Joe, Jack, AJ, et al;

I would like to say as part of this discussion that I do treasure my
certificate (#71) and it is hanging on the wall as I type this. It is right
next to my Messier Merrython award for 82 objects with binoculars.

I am happy that Brenda Branchett and her husband are still interested enough to
administer the awards and that there is enough interest by observers to keep
going after them. I view this as THE award that proves that an observer can
really use his telescope to view the sky with a sense of accomplishment.

Yes, I have gone on to crazier lists, but I do appreciate all the people who
have completed this daunting task. I would mention Brian Workman who finished
the list in a 6 inch f/5 Newtonian. Lots of those objects are going to be
pretty tough in 6 inches of aperture.

I would hope that those of us who have completed the H400 would "talk it up" as
a great list to take on once an observer has completed the Messier and "Best of
NGC" lists. This task will certainly make an observer prepare for an observing
session and learn to use their scope to find their way among the stars. You
can't ask for more than that.

Clear Skies to us all;
Steve
