[AZ-Observing] Re: Herschel 400 Awards in Arizona

Strictly speaking, the appearance of 90 - some percent of
galaxies in a 8" to 12" scope is such that you could make up
a set of 5 rubber stamps. First is a circular outline fuzzy
with no central brightening, then a circular fuzzy with a bright
core. The next set will be a ellipse shaped fuzzy with yes/no
central cores. The last will be a edge on thin fuzzy. These can
be used with a inking pad and can be stomped into a starfield-
which could also be produced by dipping a brush into thinned
acrylic paint of the star color (white is using black paper
and black if drawing on white paper) and swatting it over the
paper a few times. ;-) Condensed areas in the pattern will do
for the open clusters and good splats become the GLOBulars.

That just leaves the nebulae...which a spill of hot chocolate
  could do.

It seems to me things could be considerably speeded up by using a GOTO
scope, spending a few seconds on each object. 400 times 5 seconds is
33.33 minutes of actual observing time. At the right time of the year
probably all could be done in one night! Then, it is a simple matter in
the warmth of your home, with a nice cup of hot chocolate, to draw the
objects from a book of actual photographs or from a book of someone
else's drawings (-:
